Working with Artists Helen and Colin David

I work with Artist/designers Helen and Colin David as their embroiderer. Their ongoing project- Living Quarters is where they live for one quarter of a year in a chosen location and experience and immerse themselves in the culture, people and traditions of the area. Their creative response is realised as individual and collaborative works culminating in a final show.

“Not Only When The Moon Shines” 2012-15 is the second in the series of the Living Quarters project which was inspired by Japanese culture based on their trip to Kyoto. For this I have worked on large scale embroideries incorporating antique kimonos and other sourced Japanese fabrics. I have also worked on various other pieces using techniques including three dimensional padding, embroidery, beading and relief florals. One of the main pieces I was involved in creating was The Kyoto Kimono.

The Kyoto Kimono is a large scale piece at 7metres in length and brings together in a visual form all of the artists’ experiences. This piece includes techniques of felt applique, digital printed applique, free-machine embroidery and padded quilting

In 2010-12 I worked on the Spanish inspired art collection, the first in the series of the Living Quarters project “Edge of Flesh and Dreaming” for Helen and Colin David. During this project I created embroidery embellishments on sourced antique linens using various techniques including hand embroidered satin stitch cursive script, lace applique and embellishment of antique beading/sequins to create textural surfaces and details onto manual/digital prints.

In 2014 I worked with Helen and Colin David on pieces for the “Time Bleeds” exhibition at Folkestone Fringe 2014. I produced for them 100 flags of hand printed bunting in red and white representing Brittan in years of conflict. I also worked on some military embroideries using satin stitched gold embroidered script and created the small “Hope” cross stitch embroidery for “What We Mourn For The Dead Is The Loss Of Their Hopes” piece.

Working with Artist Henry Hussey

I have been working as an embroiderer to artist Henry Hussey, where I re-create his imagery using intricate machine embroidery. Using detailed layers of colour and embellishments I aim to create sumptuous surfaces and varied textures within each piece.
Hussey then combines these embroideries, interweaving the imagery and text in a collaborative style to construct larger pieces of artwork.
